Once upon a time...Cinderella!

Hello readers! Today i would like to start my post with a question....

If someones asks you about Cinderella, what is it the fisrt thing that appear in your mind?

Probably you are going to think about the most famous version of this tale which was created by Walt Disnery in 1950.

But...did you know that Cinderella is a fairy tale with multiple versions, ral and written, in the entire world?

The story of Cinderella is considerate the most popular fairy tale around the world. This tale is more that 1.000 years old. Only in Europe there are about 500 different versions about this tale!!. We cannot know which is the oriin but it is believed that maybe it has a Chinese origin because the oldest version it is the Chinese version.

Do you know any version of Cinderella?

Some of the versions are:

  •  The Cinder Maid, (various European).
  • Cinderella or The Little Glass Slipper, (France):
  • Katie Woodencloak, (Norway).
  • The Broken Pitcher, (England).
  • Cinderella, (Germany).
  • The Indian Cinderella, (Native American).
  • The Hearth-cat, (Portugal).

As you can see there are a lot of versions, and maybe you did not know these. The majority of these versions have common elements, but also there are different changes depending on the place, era, manners...But let me tell you about two of them!

The Cinderella of the Brothers Grimm.

The Brothers Grimm were Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. They were German academics and authors who together collected and published folklore. They are among the most well know storytellers.

The brothers Grimm wrote one of the most bloody and horrifying versions of Cinderella. The German Cinderella was called Aschenputel. She was helped by some birds and a tree that grow up over her mother's tomb. The tree gave clothes to Cinderella in order to make the prince fell in love with her. The two horrible stepsisters tried to cheat the prince. One of them cut a bit of her heel in order to force ther foot into the shoe, the other girl cut the toe with the same objetive. At the end of the story, the birds pecked out the stepsisters eyes and they became blind.

Cinderella ot the Litlle Glass Slipper of the Charles Perrault.

Charles Perrault was born in Paris in 1628. He was writer. He was famous in tales for children. With his literature he developed the imagination of lot of children.

The current and most famous version of the Cinderella is based in the Charles Perrault version. Perrault softened the story. In this case the France Cinderella was a kind and patient girl, who forgave her stepsisters and when she married and she became princess she invited her stepsisters to the castle and she  made her stepsisters married with two rich men.

Finally, I would like to say that I read the two versions. On the one hand, I am very surprised when I read the Brother Grimm's version, for me it is too horiible how the two stepsisters tried to cheat the prince. This type of version aimed for adult public. On the other hand, I found some differences between the Perrault version and the version that I know (Walt Disnery), but this version did not cause in me the same effect that the first one. This type of version is more aimed for children public.

Did you know other versions of Cinderella tale?

See you soon reader!

  1. The first thing I think when I think in Cinderella is... A SHOE!
    Hello Cristina! :)
In my opinion we felt very surprised when we knew that we can find different versions of a fairy tale (at least this was my case). I think that this is one of the most interesting points of fairy tales. The authors work in order to develop their own stories, giving their own points of view and showing to the reading their morals. We, as readers, we can feel a little bewildered reading different versions. However, it is interesting and useful. We proved it in the last class.
I don't think that this resource could be dangerous if we use it in class, but we have to be careful because maybe we don't want to transmit to our students what the author wants to express in his story.
    Good post and good job!
    See you :)

  2. Hello Cristina! I am very surprised about your post! I am a big fan of Disney’s films; I knew that almost all the films had subliminal messages but I had not known about the different version of the films.
In my opinion is a good idea the fact of have different versions, it is interesting to see different kind of develop of the story because in this way there are more possibilities that more people likes the story.
My favourite Disney’s film is: ‘’ The little Mermaid’’.
She is a little mermaid who wants to know how the life on earth is and she makes a pact with the witch’s see. The witch offers to her both legs in exchange of her voice. If she is not able to give a kiss of love before the third day the little mermaid would belong to the wicked witch and she accepted. At the end of the story the little mermaid gets to fall in love of a prince who gives her first love kiss.
I have been investigating about ‘’the little mermaid’’ inside the depths of the net and I have found some interesting information about the story that maybe is intersecting for you.
Walt Dysney acquired in 1940 the rights of the original story by Hans Christian Andersen.
22 years have passed since the princess fell in love with a human, conquering your heart with much suffering and starring the greatest triumph of the Disney studio from the 70s. Becoming, the first princess with scales instead of the usual party dress.
The Little Mermaid was screened for the first time in Spain on December 5, 1990.
Disney based the face and personality of the protagonist in the character of the actress Alyssa Milano.

The movement of the hair as long and silky as Ariel was a very difficult for the animators, and even if many of its scenes take place underwater.
Luckily, the Disney staff could look at the images of the astronaut Sally Ride, provided with a very similar hair, and its oscillations in zero gravity.
Little mermaid stressed as the return of Disney to their best moment after the eighties.
Some of the funds drawn to the scenes of'' The Rescuers (1977)'' were reused no less than at the scene of the song ‘‘Kiss her’’ in the little mermaid.

The dress who wears Carlota, the maid of Prince Eric is the same costume worn by Cinderella, when her stepmother and stepsisters had her all day washing.
There are a lot of curious information about Disney films and I encourage you to have a look if this kind of films as much as me. I hope you enjoyed reading my post Cristina. Best regards!
